June 9 – 13th 2025-9:30am – 4:00pm

202 West 6th st, corner of Trade and 6th st, Winston Salem, NC

Immerse yourself in the joy of painting during this five-day workshop, where creativity blossoms and still life comes alive! Together, we’ll explore the art of setting up captivating compositions using flowers, vegetables, fruits, antiques, and toys as our subjects. You’ll learn the essentials of designing balanced, eye-catching arrangements and bring them to life on canvas while refining your painting techniques. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, this workshop offers a fun, supportive environment to spark inspiration, develop skills, and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.

Join us for an unforgettable creative journey filled with learning, laughter, and the satisfaction of creating your own masterpieces.

I will talk about setting up a still life and how to design a composition. I will have long tables with lots of plants, flowers and other interesting objects to choose from.

I will set up the long tables with beautiful table scapes and the students will fan around and narrow in on sections of the set up. Students can work on one painting for the 5 days.

I will demonstrate each morning working on the same painting for the full 5 days.

In the afternoons I will give each student personal attention.

After the first day you can paint along with me in the mornings on your own painting. Meaning you don’t have to watch the demos. You will take breaks at your leisure. There are places that students can walk to pick up lunch (or you can have food delivered) I will have a list of places that you can choose from.

I would love to take the class to visit the Reynolda House Museum just 2 miles away from my studio. We can go over right after class finishes on one of the days.

After class on Thursday I would also like to invite the class to my home to visit both Scott and my home studios. If you will not have a car, I will figure out car share for people.

Free parking available at the end of the block at the corner of 6th and Cherry.

Supply Notes:

I have some easels, artist benches and tv trays for students to use. If you are able I do recommend bringing a small travel pochade box with tripod. I do not allow French easels or soltek easels.

I will supply Gamsol so you won’t have to travel with it. Please bring a jar to hold the Gamsol.

The only medium I use is Gamblin solvent free gel (I do not allow and medium that has a smell)

I suggest bringing a couple canvases, you might want to do 2 paintings during the week.

Suggested sizes are 12 by 16” up to 16 by 20”. (you can bring any size you want as long as you have a carrier to take it home) You can do a smaller study each day if you want.

My favorite inexpensive canvas is Oil primed Centurion.

Don’t forget you need to be able to take your wet paintings home with you. I recommend buying a wet carrier case the same size as the canvases you will be using.

I like wet painting carriers.

I don’t think you need to buy new brushes, I do have a brush set with Rosemary and Co, but you can bring what you have. I suggest that you have bristle, synthetic and soft hair brushes. Large flat and fan shapes along with smaller round and filbert shaped.

I also suggest you have a 1½” tear drop palette knife.

I like using Viva paper towels

I use all brands of paint, the colors that I recommend are

  • Titanium White

  • Permanent yellow

  • Cadmium orange

  • Vermilion red

  • Terra Rosa

  • Transparent oxide brown

  • Permanent madder medium

  • Magenta

  • Viridian

  • Ultramarine blue

  • Ivory black

If you have other favorite colors you can definitely bring them

I love using pastel and if you are more comfortable using pastel, please bring them
